Charollais

Charollais sheep were first imported into the UK in 1976 from the same area of France as Charollais cattle. The breed has grown in popularity in the UK to over 700 registered flocks and is now the 2nd most used terminal sire.

Renowned for being hard-working, Charollais rams reach sexually maturity from 7 months of age and will work for most of the year. The rams give shepherds and ewes easier lambing due to the skeletal structure of the breed; without heavy bone, broad shoulders or big heads makes lambing a joy. Charollais ewes have strong maternal traits and an extended breeding season.

The Charollais Sheep Society, together with Charollais Sires the breed’s performance recorded group, is involved in many trials:

  • The use of Charollais rams on indexed Mule ewes
  • Comparison of high – v – low index rams
  • The development of computer tomography to improve the selection of rams
  • The improvement of selection indices for recorded Charollais rams
  • Investigation into quantitative trait loci in sheep
  • Resistance for scrapie
  • Use of Charollais rams on hill ewes to improve carcass quality

With quick growth and efficient conversion of forage, the Charollais breed is highly suitable for the demand of energy efficient ruminants in the world meat trade. Fast growth of protein from grass is efficient and sustainable.
